Rubber stamps: the difference between wooden and unmounted stamps

Rubber stamps come in two forms, mounted and unmounted, and unmounted rubber stamps consist of just the die or the die already attached to the cushion. In this article, we’ll look at each type of rubber stamp and how it’s used.

A wood-mounted rubber stamp has three different parts: the die, the cushion, and the block.

Tea blocks Mounted stamps are traditionally made of wood. The wood is sometimes shaped, making it easier to grip. You will usually find a replica of the stamp image on the block itself, making it easy to identify your stamp image.

It is quite common that while stamping, the wood block gets stained with ink. While it does affect the outward appearance of the seal, it does not affect its operation at all. If that bothers you, you can protect the wood by painting it with a coat of clear varnish.

Tea cushion it sits in the middle of the stamp and is the filler between the block and the die. The purpose of the cushion is to help distribute pressure while stamping, helping to ensure a clear and consistent image. Sometimes with use or over time you may notice the cushion beginning to loosen from the seal; this is easily repaired with glue.

Tea To die it is what contains the actual image and is made of rubber. A die that has good depth, in other words the distance between the raised part, which is the image, and the flat part, will help ensure clearly stamped images.

Wood-mounted stamps are usually sold individually or in sets, and in two different ways. You can buy them already assembled, with the rubber mounted on a cushion and then mounted on a block. However, some companies, like Stampin’ Up!, sell them unassembled: the block, image tag, and rubber die come separately.

Unmounted the stamps are simply the die portion of the stamp.

They are sold in a variety of different forms. First of all, you can buy just the die or the die mounted on an adhesive foam cushion.

Also, you can buy unmounted rubber stamps, both cut and uncut, which simply refers to whether or not the rubber is trimmed close to the embossed image or not.

Wood mounted stamps are essentially ready to go – all you need is your ink and paper and you are ready to stamp. With unmounted stamps, you should have an acrylic block to achieve the best stamping results.
