Choosing an outdoor rug

If you have a large outdoor patio or living room, you may have considered installing outdoor rugs; which can greatly increase your comfort. You will find that most outdoor rugs are made from synthetic fibers such as olefin or polypropylene. In addition, there are outdoor rugs made of natural fibers such as jute or burlap. The types differ mainly in the way they are manufactured or constructed. They consist of grass, needle, awl and loop. Most people are familiar with the indoor/outdoor type of grass mat, because it is green and made to look like grass; however, you can get the grass mat in other colors like blue and many other colors. Some can look quite wild, but the thing to remember is that you can find colors other than green.

Some uses for outdoor rugs are around hot tubs, swimming pools, screened in porches, or even your garage. As mentioned above, when thinking of indoor/outdoor rugs, most people think of plain green plastic grass rugs, but there are actually some really nice rugs that are made specifically for outdoors. This is something I didn’t realize when we were thinking about putting a rug around our hot tub and pool. The options are much bigger than you thought and you can really get an attractive (classy) rug for certain areas that adds a really nice aesthetic to an outdoor area.

As previously mentioned, the most thought of outdoor rug is what is known as marine outdoor rugs. When I think of this rug, I go back to being a kid and hanging out at the marina on the lake and all the marine rugs everywhere. It always seemed to be faded and/or torn and looked horrible. Fortunately, it doesn’t look too bad if it’s kept in good shape and replaced when it wears out. Marine mat is made to withstand constant wetting and actually holds water instead of letting it run off.

Olefin or known as polypropylene, is created from synthetic resin. The best thing about olefin is that it is extremely resistant to light and stains. Which means it’s resistant to stains, fading, and mildew. You’ll often see this rug used as turf in a backyard, on the floor of sheds, and on patios or other outdoor areas. This rug comes in a variety of colors, giving you more style and color options than the traditional marine rug.
