What is IVMS?

An In Vehicle Management System (IVMS), also known as GPS Tracking or Telematics, is an electronic device that is installed in a vehicle or mobile machine, which allows the owner, or an authorized third party, to collect and monitor vehicle data. Computer software designed specifically for IVMS records and monitors many aspects of an asset, including:

  • Lease
  • rpm
  • Speed
  • Seat belt use
  • 4×4 hooked
  • fuel levels
  • driver identification
  • Odometer
  • engine on/off
  • Doors open/close
  • use of the parking brake
  • tire pressure
  • Idling/excessive idling
  • sudden acceleration
  • system shutdown
  • personal versus business use
  • Engine/Charge Temperature
  • high lane commitment
  • hard braking

There are several types of vehicle tracking devices and they are classified as “passive”, “active” or use both. “Passive” devices store data until the active one returns to a predetermined point or area where the data is downloaded wirelessly. “Active” devices transmit data in real time over cellular or satellite networks. Many modern IVMS devices combine active and passive tracking; when a cellular network is available, data is transmitted; when a network is unavailable, the device stores data in internal memory and transmits it when the network becomes available again. The latter method offers users the ability to transmit information via least cost routing and can be configured so that critical events are reported independently.

Vehicle management systems are designed with a user interface that allows users to easily view and analyze recorded data. Systems vary, but a good IVMS platform will be easy to use, browser-based for optimal data accessibility, allow for custom reporting, and offer a secure virtual environment to protect your data.

IVMS provides businesses large and small with the information they need to manage fleets effectively and increase profit margins. Businesses typically see an immediate increase in operational efficiencies and bottom line profits through improved security, increased productivity, and compliance monitoring.

IVMS is ideal to help companies in:

  • Safeguard employees It allows users to locate their employees in the event of an emergency and protect employees working alone, and monitor and address risky driving behavior.
  • Asset protection and theft prevention It provides the ability to monitor vehicles and mobile machines to ensure assets are where they are supposed to be and, in the event of theft, enables rapid recovery by providing live tracking.
  • Increase fleet productivity and operational control Users will see marked increases in productivity as unauthorized travel ceases, detours are eliminated, optimized routes are followed, and road rules are adhered to.
  • Cargo temperature monitoring Help ensure refrigerated products are delivered safely.
  • Business Tracking vs. personal use It allows management to easily validate expense claims or ensure vehicles are used for business purposes only.
  • Easily calculate fringe benefit tax (FBT) Accurately calculate the costs of running a vehicle for FBT purposes. Running costs can be tracked and calculated by using a mobile app.
  • Improvement of the condition and useful life of assets Detect and address unauthorized vehicle use, speeding, harsh braking, excessive revving, and inappropriate driving behavior.
  • Monitor fuel consumption It provides the necessary measures and controls to ensure that fuel consumption is reduced and fuel theft is eliminated.
