wrestling with god

I am a fan of wrestling. Before I used to find these combat sports very violent and irritating, but then I discovered that there are certain qualities that these fighters exhibit that we Christians and all who want to be successful need. And they are; Stay focused and alert, self-confident, hopeful, courageous, persevering, resilient, and tactical. As John Cena will always say, “Never give up!” And the current Universal Champion and my favorite, the Big Dog Roman Reigns tells you: “Believe it!”. And he proves it in the ring afterwards. Yours is one of the bravest human beings I know. These men and women really don’t give up on a fight. Even with deep pain and blood at times, they continue to fight. They always believe it’s not over until it’s over. But I still find boxing and kickboxing too hard. I barely look at them at all. But we are not going to talk about fighting or combat sports here. No. We want to talk about fighting, fighting with God and it simply means: faithfully and tenaciously cling to God’s promises and his words until you see them fulfilled in your life or in your situation. It is clinging to God until he receives an answer to his request. It is also refusing to take no for an answer about what you know to be God’s will. There are levels you can never reach in God until you learn to ‘wrestle’ with him. This involves drawing God’s full attention to a particular situation or need, convincing Him why He should do that, and holding on to Him until He does what you asked Him to do. I’m sure it’s a very serious matter. That’s why almost everyone who wrestled with God in the Bible was over a matter of life and death or destiny. The fight with God demands strength, courage, faith, time and patience, but when it is successful, the reward is always sweet, lasting, glorious and monumental.

Let’s look at some examples of people who wrestled with God in the Bible:

Abraham
Look what happened between God and Abraham, when he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham, hearing of the impending divine judgment, took immediate action to save his nephew and his family from destruction. He wrestled, interceded and ‘wrestled’ with God to achieve it. Let’s read Genesis 18:22-33, “The other two men went on to Sodom, but the Lord stayed with Abraham for a while, and Abraham came to him and said, ‘Will you destroy both the innocent and the guilty? What if you find fifty innocent people there within the city, will you still destroy them and not spare them for their sake? Surely you would not do such a thing, destroy the innocent with the guilty. Well, you would be treating the innocent and the guilty exactly the same! you would not do that! Must not the judge of all the earth do what is right?

“And the Lord answered, ‘If I find fifty innocent people in Sodom, I will spare the whole city for their sake.’ What dust and ashes. Suppose there are only forty-five, will you destroy the city for lack of five? Do you destroy the city for lack of five? And the Lord said: ‘I will not destroy it if I find forty-five.’ Then Abraham insisted more on his request. And the Lord answered: ‘Shall I not destroy it if there are forty?’ ‘Please don’t be angry, my Lord,’ Abraham pleaded. ‘Let me speak, suppose only thirty are found?’ And the Lord answered: ‘I will not destroy it even if there are thirty.’ Then Abraham said: ‘Since I have dared to speak with the Lord, let me continue, suppose there are only twenty?’ And the Lord said: ‘then I will not destroy it for the sake of twenty.’ Finally, Abraham said, ‘Lord, please don’t be angry; I will speak but once again, suppose only ten are there?’ And the Lord said: ‘Then, for the sake of the ten, I will not destroy it.’ So the Lord went his way when he had finished his conversation with Abraham, and Abraham returned to his tent.”

wow! A master intercessor indeed! This was a very complex directed intercession. In fact, it was a ‘wrestling match’. It is unfortunate that ten righteous people could not be found in all of Sodom, otherwise this great intercessor would have successfully saved the entire city. Can we find righteous people around us today? God help us! This should be a model for any would-be intercessor. You must be patient, persistent, humble, alert, focused, and articulate. Abraham persisted and fought until he was able to save his nephew Lot and his family from that destruction. That was a typical wrestling match with God. Abraham did not give up until he achieved his goal. What do you want from God? Why have you been believing him? Time to turn it into a spiritual wrestling match. Yes. You have to fight like your whole life depends on it. And in most cases, it does. Real. We are in a war. If you don’t win that battle, you will become either a victim or a victim: your life, your career, your future, your family, your destiny, your joy, and your prosperity may be taken away from you forever. You must get up now and fight. You must wake up and pray! Call those things you need that don’t exist into existence. Everything is possible! When you refuse to give up, God will not only hurt you, but he will also make you a blessing to mankind. Please continue. Share this post with others.
