Parson Russell Terriers – Tips for Caring for Your Parson or Jack Russell Terrier

Jack Russell or Parson terriers are happiest when playing in the mud, and luckily, the mud usually dries up and falls off on its own. But all Jack Russell or Parson terriers will feel and look better if their coat is groomed. A quick brushing with a bristle brush will usually loosen dirt and restore shine to his coat.

If your dog is usually indoors, he will also lose a lot of fur in the spring, which can be a nuisance if not brushed, preferably daily.

It’s easiest to brush your dog on a raised surface covered with a blanket, which can then be shaken clean. Dead hairs may need to be pulled out and if this is the case do not bathe the dog before the process as this will make the hair too slippery.

If your dog is not a show dog, then trimming is an option. This won’t remove dead hairs, but cutting them means they will eventually fall out.

If you have brushed your Jack Russell or Parson terrier since they were a puppy, they will be relatively relaxed during the brushing process, however, if they are showing anxiety then it would be best to have them professionally brushed.

When your dog needs to take a bath, be sure to use a dog shampoo, as dog skin has a PH of 7.5, while human skin shampoo with a PH of 5.5 would cause irritation. There are special shampoos for puppies that do not require water or rinsing.

If you use your own tub instead of a special dog bath, place a non-slip mat in the bottom to prevent slipping. Get the dog wet first, then mix the shampoo with the water and apply with a large sponge. Be sure to rinse well and towel dry vigorously, which will help remove dead hairs. Combing when the hair is almost dry will complete the process.

Finally, grooming your Jack Russell or Parson Terrier should be an enjoyable time for both of you.
